Umbrella group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) held a “People’s Hearing” on the Mamasapano incident yesterday at the Plaza Miranda in Quiapo, Manila. The hearing provided a venue for the people to discuss the issues surrounding the Mamasapano operations where 44 PNP Special Action Force (SAF) troopers, 18 Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) fighters, 2 Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) and 5 civilians died. The panelists included Bayan Muna Representative Carlos Zarate, Gabriela Women’s Party Representative Luz Ilagan and Anakpawis Representative Fernando Hicap who shared about the investigation in the House of Representatives, and UP Professor Roland Simbulan who shared his insights about the US involvement in the issue. Journalist Kenneth Guda from Pinoy Weekly also joined the panel who shared the information they gathered in Mamasapano, Maguindanao during a fact finding mission.

BAYAN insisted that President Noynoy Aquino himself should be held accountable for the incident as he is the PNP’s Commander-in-Chief.

They encouraged the people to take part in the actions that will be held seeking for truth and accountability. BAYAN is set to hold a human chain along EDSA on February 25 to commemorate the anniversary of People Power 1 which toppled the Marcos dictatorship.
