May 27 — In light of the recent fire that killed 72 individuals at the Kentex factory in Valenzuela and the violent dispersals at the Tanduay workers’ strike, the labor sector is holding the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) accountable for its negligence on workers’ rights.

Groups from different sectors held a protest action in front of the DOLE in Intramuros, Manila, to collectively register the laborers’ demands in the workplace. Among these are the eradication of contractualization, the enactment of the proposed national minimum wage of P16,000 a month, and the application of labor safety standards.

The said groups called for accountability from the owners of Kentex Manufacturing Corporation, Beato Ang and Ong King Guan and from Lucio Tan, chairman of Asia Brewery Incorporated, Tanduay Distillers’ mother company.
