On June 17, a protest action was held in front of Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo, headquarters of the Armed Forces of the Phillipines (AFP), condemning the killing of Datu Ruben Enlog, Garyo Quimbo and Randy Carnasa in Paradise Embac, Paquibato District in Davao City last June 14.
The killed civilians are human rights defenders and protectors of their ancestral lands and livelihood against destructive projects. According to Piya Macliing Malayao, the Secretary General of the national indigenous peoples’ organization KATRIBU, the civilians were “viciously tagged as rebels” by “presenting them with explosive devices and an M-14 rifle”.
Furthermore, Aida Seisa, the Secretary General of Paquibato District Peasant Association (PADIPA) and vice-chairperson of SABOKAHAN Indigenous Organization, is still missing after the June 14 incident.
Groups demand immediate pull-out of the Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMinCom) and the dismantling of para-military groups from the communities to stop the worsening human rights violations in the region.
